Safety

Class-Leading 10-Airbag System
The class-leading Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) in the RX includes front seat-mounted side-impact airbags
[1]
in the RX includes front seat-mounted side airbags that provide a larger protection area than conventional side airbags. A driver’s dual-stage airbag deploys at one of three speeds, depending on things like crash severity and driver’s seat-track position. And the front passenger’s dual-stage airbag uses occupant weight and crash-severity sensors to monitor its deployment. Also included are front and rear roll-sensing side curtain airbags and a driver’s knee airbag.
[1]
All the airbag (“AB”) systems are Supplemental Restraint Systems. All ABs (if installed) are designed to inflate only under certain conditions and in certain types of severe collisions: frontal and knee ABs typically inflate in frontal collisions; side and side curtain ABs in side collisions; Roll-Sensing Curtain ABs at a severe tilt degree, roll or lateral G-force. In all other accidents, the ABs will not inflate. To decrease the risk of injury from an inflating AB, always wear seatbelts, sit upright in the middle of the seat as far back as possible and do not lean against the door. Do not put objects in front of an AB or around the seatback. Do not use a rearward-facing child seat in any front passenger seat. The force of an inflating AB may cause serious injury or death. Please see your Owner’s Manual for further information/warnings.
Vehicle Stability Features
With Vehicle Stability Control (VSC)
[1]
, wheel-speed, steering-angle and yaw-rate sensors work together to detect the onset of a loss of wheel traction. If the onset of a skid is identified, the system can apply individual brakes and even reduce the throttle to help keep the vehicle on track. Another Actively Safe feature, Traction Control (TRAC) helps deploy power to the appropriate wheels during slippery conditions.
[1]Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) is an electronic system designed to help the driver maintain vehicle control under adverse conditions. It is not a substitute for safe driving practices. Factors including speed, road conditions and driver steering input can all affect whether VSC will be effective in preventing a loss of control. Please see your Owner's Manual for further details.
Wide-View Side Monitor
To assist you with parking and when negotiating narrow passes, an available Wide-view Side Monitor
[1]
camera built into the passenger-side mirror can display an overhead view to the right of the RX at slow speeds or when in reverse.
[1]
The Wide-view Side Monitor system does not provide a comprehensive view of the front-passenger side area of the vehicle. You should also look around outside your vehicle and use your mirrors to confirm clearance. Cold weather will limit effectiveness and view may become cloudy.
Backup Camera
Backing out of tight spaces and avoiding mishaps is much easier with the available backup camera
[1]
. Using a tiny camera located above the rear license plate to capture a view of what's behind the RX when placed in reverse, the camera's view is displayed in full color on a screen within the rearview mirror or on the available Navigation System
[2]
screen.
[1]
The backup camera, available only with the Navigation System, does not provide a comprehensive view of the rear area of the vehicle. You should also look around outside your vehicle and use your mirrors to confirm rearward clearance. Cold weather will limit effectiveness and view may become cloudy.
[2]
The Navigation System is designed to assist in locating an address or point of interest. Discrepancies may be encountered between the system and your actual location. Road system changes may affect the accuracy of the information provided. Rely on your common sense to decide whether to follow a specified route. Detailed coverage not available in every city or roadway. Periodic updates available at an additional cost. Please see your Navigation System Owner's Manual for further details.
Active Front Headrests
The RX comes equipped with active front headrests
[1]
for the driver and front passenger. In certain low-speed rear-end collisions, the active front headrests use the force of the occupant's body against the seatback to move the headrest diagonally upward and forward instantaneously to help support the head, thereby helping to reduce the possibility of whiplash.
[1]
Active headrests can help prevent or limit the extent of whiplash in certain types of rear-end collisions.
Pre-Collision System
A front-mounted millimeter-wave radar sensor on the available Pre-Collision System (PCS)
[1]
constantly monitors the distance and closing speed of a vehicle traveling ahead. When the system's computer determines that a frontal collision is unavoidable, the PCS preemptively tightens the front seatbelts and preps the Brake Assist
[2]
for increased braking pressure the moment the driver steps on the brake pedal. [1]
The Pre-Collision System is designed to help reduce the crash speed and damage in certain frontal collisions only. It is not a collision-avoidance system and is not a substitute for safe and attentive driving. System effectiveness depends on many factors, such as speed, driver input and road conditions. Please see your Owner's Manual for further information.
[2]
Brake Assist is designed to help the driver take full advantage of the benefits of ABS. It is not a substitute for safe driving practices. Braking effectiveness also depends on proper brake-system maintenance and tire and road conditions.
Direct Tire Pressure Monitor System
The Direct Tire Pressure Monitor System
[1]
in the RX constantly monitors the air pressure of all tires, including the spare. When it senses that tire pressure is critically low, it alerts the driver with an indicator light.
[1]
The Lexus Tire Pressure Monitor System alerts the driver when tire pressure is critically low. For optimal tire wear and performance, tire pressure should be checked regularly with a gauge; do not rely solely on the monitor system. Please see your Owner's Manual for details.
ABS With Brake Assist
Stepping on the brake pedal quickly and forcefully during an emergency situation activates the four-sensor, four-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Brake Assist
[1]
. Once activated, the system provides supplemental braking power if the driver does not apply enough pressure to the pedal. And to help provide even greater control, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) modulates the amount of fluid pressure distributed to the front and rear brakes.
[1]
Brake Assist is designed to help the driver take full advantage of the benefits of ABS. It is not a substitute for safe driving practices. Braking effectiveness also depends on proper brake-system maintenance and tire and road conditions.
Reinforced Body
The RX is built with a welded-steel unibody frame, strong box-section, side-impact door beams and impact-dissipating front and rear crumple zones. As a result of information gathered during the 233 crash tests performed on the RX during development, reinforcements to the roof, roof header, floor, crossmembers and the A-pillar help provide increased buckling strength and improved load sustainability when buckled, helping to reduce the deformation of the cabin in the event of certain severe collisions.
Rain-Sensing Wipers
With this theft-deterrent system, a rolling code immobilizes the engine unless the proper SmartAccess
[1]
[2]
key is detected.
[1]
The SmartAccess system may interfere with some pacemakers or cardiac defibrillators. If you have one of these medical devices, please talk to your doctor to see if you should deactivate this system.
[2]The engine immobilizer is a state-of-the-art anti-theft system. The key transmits an electronic code to the vehicle. The engine will only start if the code in the transponder chip inside the key matches the code in the vehicle’s immobilizer. Because the transponder chip is embedded in the key, it can be costly to replace. If you lose a key, your Lexus dealer can help, or you can find a qualified independent locksmith to perform high security key services at www.aloa.org.
Theft-Deterrent System
With the available rain-sensing wipers,if a sensor at the top of the windshield detects raindrops, the wiper blades are activated at an appropriate speed.
