Innovation
Innovation
Innovative technology stretches a gallon of gas further than ever
before. The revolutionary Lexus hybrid system combines an advanced
internal combustion engine and electric motor technology, all managed
by intelligent electronic control systems. This helps increase fuel
economy along with reducing CO2 emissions. Increased performance, less
gas: Lexus hybrid technology isn't just an important moment in the
history of luxury vehicles. It's the beginning of a whole new history
altogether.
Regenerative Braking
Regenerative braking is an advanced feature that allows the electric
motor to act as a generator when braking. It captures kinetic energy
that normally would be lost during the vehicle's deceleration, and
converts it into electric energy. This energy recharges the battery,
further increasing the hybrid system's efficiency. The regenerative
braking system is especially effective during city driving, where
repeated stopping is common.
Electronic Control
Unit
Essentially the "brain" of the hybrid system, the Electronic Control
Unit (ECU) manages the power flow between the generator, battery and
motor. By constantly monitoring various driving conditions, the ECU
allows the transmission to get optimal power and fuel consumption from
the powertrain.
Planetary Gear Set
While the ECU is the "brain" of the hybrid system, the planetary gear
set manages the physical interaction between the engine, electric motor
and generator. The Planetary Gear is ingenious in its ability to
seamlessly harness and transmit power from the high-speed electric
motor, enabling a more compact, as well as more powerful motor. Because
of this leap forward in efficiency, the gear should enjoy much longer
life, and result in fewer frictional losses and quieter driving.
Continuously
Variable Transmission
Performance is further enhanced by the amazing Continuously Variable
Transmission (CVT). Unlike typical automatic transmissions which have a
fixed number of gear combinations, the hybrid's CVT allows for
virtually unlimited combinations, maximizing the powertrain's
efficiency and allowing the driver to enjoy a smoother, jolt-free
acceleration that can't be experienced with conventional transmissions;
and yet the CVT does not require more maintenance.
